President of Boats

Thomas Griffiths
I joined the boat club when I first arrived in Oxford (all that time ago...) and thought quite simply why not give rowing a try? Now three years later I'm President of the darned thing! I've been up to a lot in my SHBC lifetime incuding winning 2 sets of Blades, being Social Secretary & Development Secretary (organising some awesome events) and even being Foot of the River! Basically I'm here to make sure things get done in SHBC so if there's anything you're curious about, just give me or anyone below a shout!

Despite trying very hard to ignore the Boat Club when I arrived at Oxford (I thought rowing was just for posh twonks!) I was eventually convinced to give it a go mid-way through my first Michaelmas, and haven’t looked back since! In my time in SHBC I’ve had some great and interesting experiences from being at the ‘foot of the river’ in my first year, to winning Blades at the end of my 2nd. For me what really makes rowing are the people you get to meet. There is a really nice community within the boat club, and it is them (rather than the early mornings and long erg sessions!) that keep me coming back.

As VP I’m in charge of ensuring as a boat club we fulfil all our Health, Safety and Welfare requirements as well as keeping up to date with our legal responsibilities with the Environment Agency.

Women's Captains

Poppy Ellison and Georgia Comrie (Left to right)
Hello! We’re Poppy and Georgia (collectively known as Goppy) and we are the Women’s Captains (double the trouble, double the fun!) Like many people who came here, we both felt that we would be denied of the full Oxford experience until we gave rowing a go, and once you start, there’s no going back! Although we have only been rowing for a term, it has been a great experience, and we've met loads of lovely people.

Men's Captains

James Van Horne and Oliver Bishop (Left to right)
Hi, Jim here. When I joined the boat club at the beginning of my first year, I never thought I would end up as a Captain. Here I am, though, a year and a half later doing just that. SHBC is a great group to be involved with on in both the athletic and social aspects. We have a lot of fantastic and motivated rowers who are always keen to welcome anyone interested in giving rowing a try. If you are interested, don't hesitate to contact me via my Nexus email (I'm the only James van Horne in the Oxford directory).

Hi, I'm Oli and I'm one of the Men's Captains. Like most, I started rowing for the first time at Hugh's, have never looked back and it's now a central part of my uni life. My love of crew dates and curries lead me to spend two terms on the committee as Social Sec, and now somehow alongside Jim, I've ended up as co-captain! We organise coaching and land training for the guys and are always keen for new recruits: give it a try- you won't be disappointed!

Captain of Coxwains

Sofia Hauck
I joined the boat club because rowing seemed like a key part of the Oxford experience, and so I could watch the sunrise over the river on a regular basis. I recruit, train and organise all of our coxes, order and maintain our coxing equipment, and do some rowing and coxing myself. I'm a third-year Biological Science student, and currently live in New York.

Jonathan Harrison (Jono)
Hey, I’m Jono and I've been rowing for over six years now. It’s the friendly community within SHBC that just keeps me coming back for more. If you get the chance, then do have a go! I have also been involved with coaching novices and our women’s second crew since 2011.

Women's Social Secretaries

Rachel Holmshaw and Philippa Keane (Left to right)
Hi, we’re Pippa and Rachel, the women’s social secretaries. Pippa was KEANE (see what I did there) to join the boat club in fresher’s week and dragged me along with her. We both quickly embraced the rowing lifestyle, early mornings included! We ensure that everyone is enjoying themselves and that not too many poor life choices are made. We coordinate crew dates and group socials for the women’s crews to keep morale high and the lash flowing. Feel free to contact us anytime if you have questions, or would like to crewdate us.

I'm Ben, I'm a third year Engineer, and I <3 making websites. That's my job on the committee, setting up and updating this wonderful hub of rowing goodness. I'm also rowing with M1.
After seeing all my friends have heaps of fun rowing during my first year, it quickly became apparent that I was missing out. So I decided to give it a shot at the beginning of last year, "Just for a term", and then "Maybe two terms" and then... Well then I ended up on the committee. What started out as something I was doing so I could say "I rowed at Oxford" turned into a sport I've really enjoyed doing, and I'm really glad I gave it a try - I just should have started sooner, like everyone else!
