Torpids was a tough but awesome campaign for St. Hugh's this year. Everyone involved put in a tremendous amount of effort, and the week was enjoyed by all. W2 fought to the end, M2 blistered their way through div V, W1 stayed solid even amongst strong competition, and M1 had more races than any other crew on the river and still gave it everything they had, holding out to the end. Here's a day-by-day breakdown of how it happened.
On the first day, W2 were bumped by Peter's, but nearly got the overbump on St. Antony's II. M2 smashed Merton II in no time at all. W1 hit the bank off the start, got bumped by Trinity and Corpus but got it together and held off Wadham II. M1 had a terrible start allowing Exeter to gain on them, before Somerville came storming through to bump them too, knocking M1 down to the top of div 3.
From there onwards things improved. On the second day, W2 got a mighty overbump on St Antony's II. M2 were caught by Green Templeton, but that's nothing to be ashamed of, especially as they then went on to bump Lincoln II. W1 were bumped by a strong Wadham II. M1 rowed over at the top of div 3, leaving Peter's for dead, before gaining 3 lengths on Queen's (trying for the double overbump) at the bottom of div 2.
On day three, W2 lost a couple of places after a very rocky start, just before the first Klaxon of the competition. M2 trounced Exeter II for their third bump in three days. W1 were caught by a very sharp Brasenose, but fought back for their first bump this campaign, an overbump on St Hilda's. M1 showed everyone they deserve to be back in division two by leaving Christ Church II trailing in their wake for a very tidy row over at the top of div 3.
On the final day, W2 were bumped by Wadham III. M2 rowed over at the head of div V, sending Hugh's M2 to the highest position it has ever reached. W1 rowed over, having put in a fantastic performance this week for such an inexperienced boat. M1 rowed over at the head of div 3, fighting off a gutsy Christ Church II boat once again.
Overall W1 fell 3 places, W2 fell 4 places, M1 fell 2 places and M2 went up 3 places. Torpids can be a cruel mistress, but we didn't let it get us down, we kept going, and we should all be proud of the results we pulled out this week.
