Oriel Regatta Saturday June 14th 2014
Not to let Summer VIIIs end the rowing excitement for the term, the women's side of the Boat Club entered an VIII and a IV into Oriel Regatta. Our VIII fought long and hard, whilst our IV came out as Oriel Regatta champions! Great work ladies!
Summer Solstice Outing Saturday 21st June 2014
Just in case rowing training wasn't early enough for our rowers and coxes, three VIIIs braved seeing two 3 o' clocks in one day in order to make the most of the longest day of the year and get on the water nice and early! Undoubtedly not much sleep was had by all as many embraced Oxford tradition and enjoyed Oxford's nightlife beforehand... A successful Summer Solstice outing all around: even if the coxes' lines may have been stumbling a bit!
VIIIs Dinner Saturday 31st May 2014
A great nice of great food, great wine and great sconces to top off a great VIIIs campaign! All members definitely deserved their extra course of cheese and port after such great success in racing. And yes, the night did end with the classic plank-race lasting over 14 minutes. Great job everyone and hope that a great night was had by all!
Summer VIIIs 28th-31st May 2014
The bloodbath of bumps returned: SHBC with six VIIIs in tow. The battles were varied- many smashing their opponents in the form of bumps and over-bumps (in the case of W1) and others fighting long and hard over days for their spearing (M1 to Merton M1). Our Boathouse was one of the most victorious on the island with two blade-winning crews on the womens' side (W2 and W3) and not a spoon in sight for any crews. To be continued Torpids 2015....
Rowing On Saturday 23rd May 2014
All crews qualified with promising results for VIIIs1 M3 'Schools/Beer boat' just one second behind M2, qualifying in 13th and 11th positions respectively.W2 qualify with the 3rd fastest women's time! W3 qualify in 20th place, faster than Magdalen, Oriel, Keble, Anne's, Pembroke, Worcester AND Christ Church 3rd VIIIs. Great job everyone!
Thames Ditton Regatta Saturday 17th May 2014
Further success for SHBC outside of OURCs! W1 smashed the novice VIIIs final and bring home some lovely shiny pots! W2.5 sadly lost to Kingston Grammar School (on their home stretch of water) in novice IVs but in a great race! Well done both crews!
City Bumps Saturday 26th April 2014
The men's side entered a VI and an VIII into City bumps ahead of Summer VIIIs in 5th week. It was blades for MA as Univ A were impaled in the gut. MB finished the day with two bumps and two row-overs. 5 races, 3 different coxes, 3 standard bumps, 2 overbumps... We could not have hoped for more. Thanks to everyone who helped today or during preparation!
Crews were as follows...well done!
MA - Str: Jim van Horne, 3: Jamie Gardiner, 2: Ben Wedd, Bow: Ben Harrington, Cox: Rebecca Pullon
MB - Str: Josh Cowls, 3: Ryan Wagner/Andrew Kerr, 2: Lukasz Falandysz, Bow: Ben Pearson, Cox: Tom Bladon

Torpids Roast Saturday March 8th 2014
This year's lack of Torpids due to excessive flooding on the Isis definitely put no dampener on the annual Torpids Roast! After a successful replacement Ergstravaganza should-be rowers, coxes and alumni drowned their lack-of-bump sorrows in wine, gravy and chocolate pudding! Endless sconcing provided the classic entertainment for the evening and a great time was had all around. Until next year!
Torpids Erg-stravaganza Saturday March 8th 2014
Always keen for an erg, a bit of competition and some team-spirit, SHBC joined forces with Teddy Hall Boat Club for a replacement Torpids: land-training style! Maplethorpe Hall quickly became an erg-haven where a term's worth of training was finally put to good use. With team sprints, individual heats of both long and short distances lycra was a necessity! Thank-you for everyone who took part and helped organise the day- it was a great success and definitely a fun alternative to Torpids!
Alumni Dinner Saturday 22nd February 2014
SHBC Alumni from far and wide traveled back to their beloved Hugh's for a spectacular night of fine wine, food and memories. It was great to see so many blue and yellow blazers, see more friendly faces again and continued support for your Boat Club! Thanks to everyone who came along!
Milton Keynes Training Day Saturday 25th January 2014
A bit of flooding on Boathouse Island doesn't stop SHBC from training for Torpids... we just commute somewhere else! Whilst most crews make the diversion to the infamous Dorney Lake, Hughsies managed to bag one of the only empty spaces of water within 30km of Oxford to final get some water-time in! Only managing to forget one cox, a memorable and fun day was had by all!
Christ Church Curry Saturday 30th November 2013
Christ Church Curry was, as ever, a fantastic night of curry and sconces - the perfect evening to celebrate our resounding successes in the regatta. We packed out Arzoo's (formerly Jamal's) with over 50 people in a space suitable for around half that many, and definitely drowned out Jesus College on the next table with their poor attempts at cross-table sconcing. Thanks to Rachel Holmshaw and Venkat Kondragunta for organising.
Christ Church Regatta 27th - 30th November 2013
This year's ChCh Regatta was not dogged by the terrible flooding of last year, meaning all crews got lots of water time and were able to reach a solid standard - so much so that a men's crew AND a women's crew made it through to the round of 16 on Saturday, a fantastic achievement. A huge thanks to all our novice coaches for giving up their time to make all this possible.
Conquistadors Masked Ball Saturday 19th October 2013
St Hugh's Boat Club's traditional Matriculation afterparty was once again a resounding success, with a fantastic evening had by all who attended. Messages of approval included "Massive thank-you to the boat club for last night!! Definitely a fab end to matriculation!". Huge thanks to our social secretaries, Rachel Holmshaw and Venkat Kondragunta for organising the evening.
Oxford City Royal Regatta and Sprint 17th - 18th August 2013
To bring our year of racing to a close, and bid farewell to some friends who must sadly leave us, we entered several crews into Oxford City Royal Regatta and Sprint. The two-day event featured a 1000m course on the Saturday and 500m course on the Sunday, with our crews in the NOV 1x, IM1 2-, NOV 4+, IM3 4+ and IM3 8+ categories. Full details of the regatta can be found on the City of Oxford Rowing Club website, and further details of our crews and race times can be found on the Racing pages.
